Beach Haven

This project centers around redesigning a 1930s Cape Cod/Shaker-style beach house in Rockaway, Oregon, recently purchased by Amelie Walker. The goal is to transform the home into a sustainable, net-zero residence that reflects both Amelie's love of historical architecture and her desire for environmental responsibility. Drawing inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic and democratic design principles,
the team sought to preserve the house’s original charm while incorporating modern systems and materials to withstand the coastal climate and meet green building standards. This involved honoring the historical character of the neighborhood and integrating features such as passive solar design, an efficient building envelope, and renewable energy generation through photovoltaic panels.

To inform the design process, the team conducted site visits, collected original blueprints, and interviewed local architects and contractors experienced in sustainable coastal construction. The research emphasized the importance of maintaining architectural integrity while upgrading systems for energy efficiency, durability, and occupant health. Literature on net-zero design, green materials, and historical preservation guided the design approach, ensuring a balance between tradition and innovation. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how blending historical context with modern sustainability can create a resilient, efficient, and aesthetically rich home that meets both personal and environmental goals.
